The importance of consistency

One of the most important parts of running a successful business is providing your customers with a product and experience that is not just high quality, but consistently high quality. A reputation can take years to build but can be destroyed instantly following a single bad experience, so making sure your customers know what to expect from your products is just as important as the product itself.

All the biggest brands in the world have been built off the back of customers knowing exactly what to expect when they buy their products. This is especially true in the world of food and beverages. If you think of the most well-known brands in the world, they have all stuck around due to the power of iconic, consistently satisfying products. Everybody knows exactly what they will get when they walk into a McDonalds or open a can of Coca-Cola, and all coffee businesses should be striving for that level of product consistency.

The dangers of inconsistency

The difficulty with coffee-based drinks though is that there are so many steps where small changes can have a big impact on the quality of the beverage. For example, just looking at the grinding, if too much is ground or if it’s ground too fine, the water won’t be able to flow through the portafilter correctly, which has a knock-on effect on the extraction time. The difference in a few grams worth of coffee grounds may not look like much, but it could completely change the flavour of the espresso. Another example would be the heating of milk for the likes of a latte, cappuccino, flat white etc. Heating for too long or to the wrong temperature will result in inconsistent drinks. See our blog on textured milk here.

As well as the impact on the product, you must also consider how that will affect profits. The less consistent the experience, the less likely your customers are to come back. On top of that you will also have a higher amount of wastage due to drinks either being thrown away, or needing to be replaced when a customer isn’t happy. Any way you look at it, a real trust in the consistency of your product is an absolute necessity for any business with coffee on the menu.

Technology you can trust

Achieving this level of confidence in your coffee is not a simple task. Everyone knows what it feels like to receive a less-than-frothy cappuccino or a not-so-flat flat white, and even the most prolific high street coffee shops have been known to suffer from the occasional underperforming store. The key to ensuring your drinks are perfect every time is having high performing equipment that never lets you down.
